UPDATE | Police identify man killed, woman injured in semi rollover on I-80
Police have identified a man who was killed and a woman who was critically injured after a semi rolled off of Interstate 80 and into a ravine.
It happened around 6 a.m. near 50th street on eastbound I-80. Witnesses told police the semi swerved left, over-corrected to the right, and left the roadway. The truck landed on its top several hundred feet below in a ravine between the interstate and some railroad tracks.
Danny Ryan, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was recovered and removed from the truck several hours later.
Emergency crews removed 61-year-old Debra Ryan, his wife, from the truck and used a rope to pull a stretcher up the hill. According to fire crews she was in the sleeper of the truck and had to be extricated. At last check with emergency crews, she was alert at the hospital.
First responders struggled to reach the scene due to the traffic, steep hills and muddy conditions. Crews were asking drivers to avoid I-80 Eastbound near 60th so they can work, but all lanes of eastbound I-80 were reopened shortly before 8 am.
