Police identify man found dead at end of chase

Omaha Police have identified a man found dead at the end of a high-speed chase Thursday night as Elijah Smith, 25.

Smith, suspected of robbery, died after pursuit that ended near 3700 Cook Plaza Thursday night.

At 6:38 p.m. officers tried to stop his car near 52nd and State Street. The vehicle was believed to have been used in the robbery.

He sped away and the pursuit began, at times reaching speeds up to 90 miles-per-hour.

The vehicle pursuit ended near that Cook Plaza location when the suspect got out of his car and ran.

Police say that during the foot chase that followed a firearm was discharged. Smith was found dead.

Police said that as of Thursday night they did not believe that any officers had fired weapons.

The incident is currently being reviewed by the Officer Involved Investigation Team and the Nebraska State Patrol.
