The season for unwanted pests
The weather in Lincoln is always changing and according to pest controllers this is what draws unwanted critters into your home. They could be looking to escape the rain, heat, or extreme cold, depending on the season.
Thomas Potter has been an exterminator at ABC Termite and Pest Control for 15 years.
"Ants are kinda coming to an end and we are hitting spider and wasp season," he said.
One pest to keep an eye out for is the Brown Recluse spider. If bitten by one of these, there is no antidote and the skin around the bite might have to be removed if it becomes infected.
Potter said these spiders are becoming more common in Lincoln.
"It used to be common to see garden spiders, occasional wolf spiders; now that the Brown Recluse is pretty established in this area, we hear that almost on a day to day basis," he said.
The spiders are 'reclusive,' meaning they like to stay in dark, isolated areas such as a basement corner or untouched boxes.
If you happen to come across one, Trevor Boshart, the store manager at Q P Ace Hardware said there are many things you can do.
"There's different types of traps, there's different types of sticky traps, different baits that they come in take some bring it back to the colony and it kills everything that was there," said Boshart.
When it comes to treatments, he said spray works the best because it covers a wide area.
But, spiders aren't the only pests giving people grief.
"I opened up the garage door and the moment the lights turned on I just saw a blanket of ants...probably like a foot wide on either side," said Trey Hegel.
When it comes to treating pests, experts say if you're still seeing them after two or three rounds of spraying, it's a good idea to call in a professional.
