A 2-year-old boy was found outside in two-degree weather near 32nd and Poppleton Tuesday afternoon wearing only a t-shirt, diaper and boots.

According to the police report, two witnesses who saw the child wrapped him in a coat, put him in their car and called 9-1-1.

Police got the call at 2:10 p.m. The witnesses said the child was crying and visibly shaking from the cold.

Responding officers canvassed the area but came up empty in the hunt for where the boy belonged.

The officers returned to the 32nd and Poppleton location, and at 2:45 p.m. they were approached by Chasity Howard, 41, who said she was looking for a little boy.

Howard told the officers that a person staying with her, Courtney McDaniel, 26, was supposed to be watching the child. Howard said she had been sleeping and woke up to find McDaniel and the child gone.

Howard said she called McDaniel who said she had gone to the store and would return. McDaniel arrived at the Poppleton location at 2:55 p.m. and told the officers that she had left the boy in Howard's care. Howard said that wasn't true.

McDaniel then told officers that she had been taking care of the boy for the child's mother, who was out of town. She said she had just met the mother about a week before agreeing to watch the boy in her absence.

McDaniel was cited for Child Abuse by Neglect/No Serious Injury.

The officers were told to take the boy to Project Harmony. By they time they arrived, authorities had made contact with the child's mother and she was on her way to Project Harmony to pick him up.
