Holdrege man gets prison for 2017 Kearney chase

KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - The man who led Kearney police on a pursuit which covered 32 blocks is getting at least ten years in prison.

James Covey, 47, was sentenced to 10-12 years in prison for felony use of a motor vehicle to avoid arrest.

In October, 2017, Kearney Police attempted to stop a 1999 Chevy pickup for a traffic violation at a Kearney intersection. The vehicle failed to stop and took off and led police on chase through the north end of town. The vehicle eventually stopped when it struck a drainage ditch.

Covey fled the scene and was found lying face down on the ground about 100 yards away.

At the time police arrested him on a warrant out of Phelps County. Covey is also serving 20-30 years for witness tampering in the Phelps county case.
