Electrical contractor taken to burn center after incident at construction site

OMAHA, Neb. -- Two electrical contractors were injured in an electrical accident at a construction site near 49th and Dodge on Monday afternoon; one was later taken to a burn center in Lincoln.

An Omaha Fire official confirmed two workers were injured after they struck a ground line at the construction site.

The injured workers were sent to Nebraska Medicine, one Code 3 — with serious injuries, according to officials at the scene — and one Code 2.

Freddie Maldonado, 33, had minor burns on his hands. Alex Cooper, 25, was later transported to the Lincoln burn center.

The two workers were in an elevated lift basket at the top floor of a building at 49th and Dodge when the incident happened, the OFD official said. Omaha Public Power District was called to the scene after the incident to cut power to the area, an OPPD official said.

An OPPD representative told 6 News that it is also investigating the incident and said OPPD was unaware electrical work was being done at the site today.

The outage affected 2,351 customers within the area of Burt Street, Jones Street, 64th Street, and Saddle Creek Road by 12:45 p.m., according to the OPPD website.

OPPD said power was restored to the area at 1:15 p.m. Monday.
