Takedowns for the Troops raises $3,000

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - For the 6th year, Lincoln High School wrestlers thanked veterans for their service in a unique way, raising more than $3,000 for the organization Disabled American Veterans.

It's all a part of the fundraiser "Takedowns for the Troops." They raise funds by asking people to pledge money for each takedown made during a match between Lincoln Southeast and Southwest.

While this fundraiser is for veterans, organizers say the students get a lot out of it as well. "I think the main thing is that kids realize that there's a lot more to the things that have occurred prior to us coming around that have led to the freedoms that we have," said Southwest Athletic Director Mark Armstrong.

Wednesday night, the competition was fierce and incredibly close. However Southwest came out the winner 31-30.
