BEATRICE, Neb. - Floodwaters are rising slightly faster than expected in Beatrice, according to the city's police chief.

Beatrice Police Chief Bruce Lang said due to the floodwaters, they closed West Court Friday at 8 a.m. The closure of West Court Street bridge means West Court, or U.S. Highway 136 has to close. He said the alternate route South to Locust Street is open.

He urges people to please drive slowly in the area so everyone can get to their destination safely.

Beatrice Public Schools is closed Friday.

Flooding on the Big Blue River in Beatrice is not expected to force closure of U.S. Highway 77 at the south river bridge. A flood stage of 26 feet would have to be reached for water to begin going over U.S. 77, just south of a river gauge.

Motorists can use a bypass south of Beatrice to get around the U.S. 136 closing.
