"We can do this" is a group feeding kids in need on the weekends. Inside the F Street Recreation Center they said they're spreading love in Lincoln through food.

Susan Brown had a conversation with her daughter, and learned some kids aren't getting meals throughout the weekend.

She took it upon herself to make as much food as she could, assuring her daughter, "and I said well we can fix that honey, that's easy," said Brown.

And Brown did just that. The next week she started the group, We Can Do This, with money from her own pocket and the help of friends.

"She asked me if I could make a 120 cookies and cupcakes a couple different months in a row and I asked her what more I could do," said Jillian Harold a colleague of Brown's.

They plan for 15 to 60 kids, but sometimes serve far more.

"I mean I don't imagine that people realize that there are so many kiddos that don't get fed regularly," said Mary Jo Oie, another volunteer for the group.

The group shops for groceries, cooks the food, and serves it at 1 p.m. on Saturdays and 2:30 on Sundays, but they also form relationships with the kids.

"There's not a lot of words for it,To see kids happy just because someone is going to give them a meal," said Brown.

And on the last Sunday of every month they celebrate any child who had a birthday in that month.

Harold, who helps back for the birthdays said, "being able to give that to them and know that they are loved and deserve to be celebrated is really special to me".

We Can Do This started with nine volunteers, but now has expanded with business partners, churches and tons of food donations.

"Something that's really special is that we plan to expand to other community centers now that F Street is a little more stable," said Harold.

The group is making strides but they still need more volunteers to serve food.

Any families in need can stop by and get a meal for their kids. And although We Can Do This is making strides they still need more volunteers. For more information go to their
