After the firing of Tim Miles, Armon Gates was hoping to stay on staff at Nebraska. He got his wish. Gates was retained by Fred Hoiberg after the two quickly got to know each other over the past two weeks. Gates describes Hoiberg as a polished coach with a high basketball IQ.
Hoiberg had Gates accompany him on recruiting trips to visit NU signees Jervay Green and Akol Arop. Gates says the two had good conversations and he believes he fills a role Hoiberg was seeking.
"I can bring to the table," Gates said. The assistant coach also says he has great value in the locker room, as he can develop strong relationships with players.
