Grand Island senior high school student-athlete named Gatorade Nebraska Player Baseball Player of the Year.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KOLN) - In its 34th year of honoring the nation's best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, today announced Cole Evans of Grand Island Senior High School as its 2018-2019 Gatorade Nebraska Baseball Player of the Year. Evans is the third Gatorade Nebraska baseball Player of the Year to be chosen from Grand Island Senior High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic experience, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Evans as Nebraska's best high school baseball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year award to be announced in May, Evans joins an elite alumni association of state award-winners in 12 sports.

The 6-foot-2, 210 pound senior shortstop and right-handed pitcher led the Islanders to a 19-11 record and the Class A state tournament this past season. Evans batted .556 with 15 doubles, 30 RBI, 30 runs scored and an on-base percentage of .631. A First Team Super-State honoree, he was also named to the All- Nebraska First Team.

Evans has maintained a 3.59 GPA in the classroom. he has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball on scholarship at Creighton University this fall.
