Nebraska Spirit Squad to feature tumbling and stunting

LINCOLN, Neb - The Nebraska Athletic Department has approved the implementation of basic stunting and tumbling for the Husker Spirit Squad beginning with the 2019-20 season.

The re-instatement of basic stunting and tumbling to the Spirit Squad’s regular routines will enhance the game-day experience for Husker fans. It will bring also Nebraska’s program to a skill level consistent with other cheer programs in the Big Ten Conference, the University of Nebraska System (Nebraska-Omaha, Nebraska-Kearney) and Nebraska high schools.

“Since I arrived at Nebraska nearly 18 months ago, I have consistently heard from fans and our cheer squad alumni about the importance of allowing our spirit squad to add more elements to their routines,” Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos said. “Our first priority is the safety of our spirit squad members and our staff has worked diligently on a plan to re-introduce stunting and tumbling, with safety at the forefront.”

Nebraska’s new policy will allow tumbling and basic one-high stunting, but will not allow other elements such as basket tosses and multi-level pyramid stunting. Nebraska will employ a phased approach to the introduction of skills and has selected stunting and tumbling skills that are regularly performed safely and effectively by cheer squads around the United States.

The Nebraska Athletic Department will also take additional steps to mitigate safety risks associated with cheerleading. The Athletic Department will devote a full-time athletic trainer to the Spirit Squad and will provide enhanced support in the areas of strength and conditioning and performance nutrition.

The Nebraska Spirit Squad posted its 2019 tryout requirements prior to the approval of basic stunting and tumbling. Stunting and tumbling will not be required elements at the 2019 spring tryouts.

The Spirit Squad will once again also be actively recruiting male cheerleaders to join the squad, with spots for up to four males beginning this fall. Most cheer programs in the Big Ten feature both male and female cheerleaders, with both groups positively contributing to an exciting in-game atmosphere.

The Husker Spirit Squad last featured stunting and tumbling in the spring of 2007. Restrictions on stunting and tumbling were first placed on the squad in 2002.
