LINCOLN, Neb. — The White team knocked off the Red team, 11-9, in a back-and-forth Game 3 of the Red-White Series at Hawks Field on Friday evening.
The teams split Games 1 and 2, combining for six total runs through two games before a scoring barrage in the rubber match. The Red team posted a 3-0 shutout win in the series opener last Friday before the White team bounced back with a 2-1 win in Game 2 on Saturday.
Game 3, which spanned six innings, included eight-batter lineups and three non-hitting fielders for both teams. The Red team took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame when newcomer Aaron Palensky blasted a solo home run.
The White team responded in the top of the second with seven runs on four hits. Sophomore Mike Addante smashed a home run, while Ben Klenke, Brett Hammit and Shay Schanaman each singled during the second inning for the White team.
The Red team tied the game at 7-7 with six runs in the bottom of the third. The squad produced five hits during the inning, including a single from Palensky, who went 3-for-4 on the night.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Red team retook the lead at 8-7 when freshman Spencer Schwellenbach blistered a leadoff home run. Schwellenbach, who was drafted in the 34th round by the Cleveland Indians in June, also hit a home run in Game 1 of the Red-White Series.
In the top of the fifth, the White team scored four runs to take an 11-8 lead. Sophomore Keegan Watson hit a leadoff triple before Klenke drove him in with a single as part of his 3-for-3 night. Sophomore Zac Luckey also doubled during the fifth inning for the White team.
In the sixth inning, both teams had runners start on first and second base and only sent three batters to the plate. The Red team managed one run, leading to the final score of 11-9 in favor of the White team.
