LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A birthday to remember for one Lincoln man and his family, not only did the World War II veteran turn 100, but his party featured a special guest and honor.

A 100th birthday party is already special, but for Chandler Tyrrell, the celebration was more than just a milestone.

“Overwhelming,” Chandler said. “It’s very overwhelming.”

Gov. Jim Pillen awarded Chandler a medal for his role in WWII.

“Have to say thank you to Chandler for his extraordinary career doing whatever it took to help us,” Pillen said. “When we celebrate the 80 year anniversary of the greatest generation we have to ask ‘what if they said no?’”

Chandler didn’t say no.

Chandler’s son, Chandler Jr., said his dad was stationed on new Caledonia Island in the Pacific Ocean, working to help supply fellow troops.

Chandler was humbled when asked why he felt he was chosen to be honored.

“I personally don’t deserve it but I’m delighted to be the recipient,” Chandler said.

But his son said from his time in the service, to adapting to being blind late in life, his dad is a shining example of resilience.

“For him, the glass is always half full,” said Chandler Jr.

And Friday was just another reminder of that for Chandler.
