The 6-foot-10-inch junior from Bursa, Turkey transferred to Nebraska from UCLA his sophomore year, playing two seasons with the Huskers. During his time at UCLA, he played in 26 games, including eight starts.
Büyüktuncel moved into the starting lineup in his first season at Nebraska, averaging 6.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. He reached double figures in six games his junior season and had three games of 10 or more rebounds.
Büyüktuncel also helped Nebraska make history by securing their first-ever tournament win — a 76-47 victory over Troy in the first round — before being eliminated in the Sweet 16 by Iowa.
“It was just like a Disney story,” Buyuktuncel told 10/11 following the loss to Iowa. “The season was awesome. We won the first two games then lost the last game to our rivals. That stinks.”
Büyüktuncel confirmed the news by announcing his decision to enter the transfer portal on social media.
“These past two years at Nebraska have been nothing short of life-changing, but the time has come for a new chapter,” Büyüktuncel’s post said. “I’m beyond thankful to Coach Hoiberg — not only an exceptional coach, but one of the best human beings I’ve had the privilege to learn from — along with our entire staff, my teammates and our incredible fans."
He will have one year of eligibility remaining.
