Davey firework shop holds safety demonstration ahead of Fourth of July festivities
DAVEY, Neb. (KOLN) - As people get ready for Fourth of July festivities and buy fireworks, one family-owned business is reminding folks how to stay safe while lighting up the sky.
From sparklers to mortars, Curt Scnase has been selling fireworks since he was a kid. What started from a card table at Scnase’s childhood home is now a brick-and-mortar store in Davey.
Safety is at the top of Scnase’s mind.
“We had a shell that came up and burst above our crowd which immediately told us were creating a bigger shoot box,” Scnase said. “And creating a box like this one here is simple and can make a world of difference when it comes to staying safe”
Scnase said people don’t have to be a handyperson to make the box.
“If you have an accidental tip over or blow out, it will contain it to that box, ”Scnase said.
To make it, take four 2 by 4 plywood pieces and cut out slots on each side so the pieces can interlock. Scnase said it helps to screw support pieces on the inside to strengthen the corners.
“Cars, people, property can all be damaged if that fireball comes screaming at two feet above the ground.”
Scnase also showed how the shoot box contains those potentially dangerous tip overs.
